SUMMARY:Concertino with Gerard McChrystal
DESCRIPTION:THIS CONCERT IS NOW SOLD OUT\n\nWe are delighted to be joining with our Patron Gerard McChrystal to perform a fundraising concert in November! \nThe Sunday afternoon concert will combine solo pieces from Gerard and ensemble pieces from the orchestra\, culminating in a performance of ‘Concertino’\, a funky new concerto by Australian composer Matthew Orlovich\, that Phoenix will be performing with Gerard taking the lead on solo alto saxophone. \nThrough its three movements\, Concertino ebbs and flows between buoyant\, sparkling music and slower\, more introspective lyricism. The soloist’s narrative draws on a variety of musical ideas\, including some courage-inducing fanfares\, a heart-felt aria and some altissimo register tightrope walking. The sax orchestra’s fingers are kept busy throughout\, with soprano\, alto\, tenor\, baritone and bass saxophones creating a kaleidoscopic setting for the soloist\, by layering snippets of melody\, trills\, drones\, some pizzicato-like punctuations and occasional slow-burning chord progressions. \nTickets for the concert are £12 each (£5 for under 16s)\, and all profits will go to the St Hugh’s Cygnet Fundraising Project\, which aims to build a welcoming\, safe space for church and community to meet. Partly funded by proceeds from the sale of the nearby church hall\, the Cygnet Project aims to provide a larger community space within St Hugh’s Church\, separated from the worship area by a movable glass screen\, along with a meeting room\, kitchen\, accessible toilets and storage\, all reconfigured on one level for ease of access. \nThe Cygnet Project is so named because the Church’s patron saint St Hugh is known to have had a swan as a pet. The Church is starting with a cygnet so that\, over time\, when the project is finished\, it will have grown into a swan. For more more information about St Hugh’s and the Cygnet Fundraising Project\, see harborough-anglican.org.uk. \nTickets are available by emailing transfig@harborough-anglican.org.uk. \nAbout Gerard McChrystal \nMulti award winning saxophonist Gerard McChrystal was born in Derry\, Northern Ireland\, and now lives in Leicester\, He has played with leading musicians and orchestras in more than 35 countries worldwide and has recorded 15 CDs.You can find more information about Gerard McChrystal at saxsaxsax.com.

SUMMARY:Newark Castle
DESCRIPTION:Phoenix is excited to have been invited to perform at the bandstand in the grounds of Newark Castle in Nottinghamshire. \nKnown as ‘the Gateway to the North’\, the castle dates back to the 12th Century and is strategically located on the Trent at the intersection of the Great North Road and Fosse Way. \nIn 1216\, King John died at Newark Castle during a tempestuous storm\, not long after he’d purportedly ‘lost’ the crown jewels attempting to cross The Wash! The Castle fell into disrepair after the Civil War\, but its walls\, towers and dungeons still stand as a reminder of Newark’s turbulent history. \nIn 1887\, the castle site was landscaped and repaired\, and opened as a pleasure garden for Queen Victoria’s 70th birthday on 24 May 1889. A covenant was made at this time for the grounds to be ‘for the free use of the people forever’\, and this covenant still exists today. \nVictorian landscape gardener H.E.Milner’s original designs did include a bandstand\, but it was not actually built and installed until the Year 2000. \nCome along and hear us play in these atmospheric surroundings.

SUMMARY:Joint Fundraising Concert - St Hugh's Church\, Harborough
DESCRIPTION:Phoenix Saxophone Orchestra is delighted to present a joint fundraising concert at St Hugh’s Church\, Market Harborough. \nTickets are £10 each (£5 for Under 16s) to include a glass of wine or soft drink\, and profits from the concert will be shared equally between Phoenix Saxophone Orchestra and the St Hugh’s Cygnet Fundraising Project. \nTickets are available by emailing transfig@harborough-anglican.org.uk \nTickets may be available on the door but\, as we are selling out fast\, we’d recommend that you give Kathy a call on 07746 782027 beforehand\, to check availability.\n \nDownload leaflet\n \n\n  \nAbout the Cygnet Fundraising Project \nBuilding a welcoming\, safe space\, where church and community meet \nSaint Hugh’s Parish Church stands at the corner of Northampton Road and Granville Street\, Market Harborough.Built in the 1940s it has been used for Christian worship and related church activities since it was first opened. \nConsultation with the local neighbourhood has identified the need for a safe and welcoming space for the community to meet and help to tackle some of the issues in the area. \nThe Church community has decided to sell the nearby hall\, with the sale proceeds being used to improve the main church building. The inside of the church will provide a large community space (bigger than the current hall)\, separated from the worship area by a movable glass screen. There will also be a smaller meeting room. The building will have a well-equipped commercial kitchen\, accessible toilets and storage. The inside of the church will be also re-configured on the one level for ease of access. \nWhilst the church is busy applying for grants\, fundraising events are all necessary to raise the funds to make these changes happen. Social events have already taken place raising £2\,000 in just a few weeks\, but there is still a long way to go! \nThe Cygnet Project gets its name because the Church’s patron saint\, St Hugh\, is known to have had a swan as a pet. The Church is starting with a cygnet so that\, over time\, when the project is finished\, it will have grown into a swan.
